By Jacob Malek
Abel Janszoon Tasnman was a Dutch explorer and a navigator. He lived from 1603- October 10, 1659. Abel married Cluegie Meyndrix and then Joanna Tiercx. He was the first explorer to reach the island of Van Diemen’s Land and New Zewzeald. He also sighted Figi Island. Abel was known for his two voyages to the North Pacific. On the first Pacific voyage his ships were Heemskerck and Zeehaeh. The object for this voyage was to obtain knowledge, "All the totally unknown provinces of Beach." On November 24, 1642, Abel sighted west coast of Tasmania, north of Macquarie Harbor. He named this find Van Diemen’s. Abel’s second voyage in 1644 was a disappointment because he did not find any area for trade or new shipping routes.
Jacob van Heemskerk served as a vice admiral. He lived from March 13, 1567-April 25, 1607. Jacob’s fame came when he attempted to find the Arctic Passage from Europe to China. On this voyage to find the arctic passage, Novaya suggested to stay in the open sea, but instead took a route that included masses of ice. On June 9, Jacob found Bear Island. The island was named Spitsbergen. This was mistaken for being part of Greenland. Jacob died because he got shot in the leg with a cannon ball.
Jacob Le Marie lived from 1585-December 1616. He was one of twenty-two children. Jacob was one of many to circumnavigate the earth. He found a strait between Tierra del Fuego and Islade los Estados. The strait was named Lemaire Strait. On January 29, 1616, Jacob found Cape Horne. He opened an unknown route.
Willem Janszoon was a navigator and a colonial governor who lived from 1570 -1630. Willem was the first European to see the coast of Australia. On November 18, 1605, he sailed from Bantam to New Guinea, then to the coast of Australia.
Willem Barentsz, a navigator, lived from 1550 -June 20, 1597. On June 1594, he tried to enter the Kara sea in hopes of finding the Northeast Passageway. The state general offered a high reward to anyone who successfully found the Northeast Passageway. The Northeast passage really never existed. Willem discovered Spitsbergen and then entered a large bay and named it Raudf Jorden. On July 7 the crew found a polar bear. The crew tried to take it back to Europe, but the bear attacked the crew. The crew had too shoot the bear with a musket. On June 2, 1595, another polar bear showed up and attacked the crew. Only two sailors were killed before the crew killed the bear. Willem got stuck in the Kara sea by ice and had to turn back. The crew had to sleep on the ice. The survivors slept with warm rocks and cannon balls. The group caught 26 arctic foxes and killed polar bears. Twelve members of the crew sailed back to the Netherlands.
